Motivations of the caver
Ask a caver what the hell he’s doing in a cold, wet and dark area. He will answer quite simply by a raising shoulders. It does not reflect the pride of caver; it expresses his impotence to explain in few words his motivation to go underground. One of the first motivations is discovering the unknown.
Making a premier for a caver is like discovering a new island for a sailor.
Caving in Zaghouan
The caves in Zaghouan mountain are extremely vertical and situated along the fault oriented 200 and 290°, are mostly sharp rifts and frequently bolder filed up to the roof and the walls are symmetrical.
In the caves of Zaghouan, we can found lots of fossilized guano, a few living bats, a lot of bone cemeteries containing remains of bats, goats and porcupines and a big number of various shells.
Some of the Zaghouan caves are certainly a lot deeper but pushing them will need more work. Nevertheless, this mountain contains the deepest vertical cave in Tunisia, which is the “4 fous” cave (-220m) and it goes much deeper.
